About

We are a leading design firm with our head office in Vancouver but work across Canada and the US. By taking an artistic approach to living walls we “paint” with plants and transform grey to green.

We are a leading North American design firm with our head office situated in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and a branch in Toronto, Ontario.

We undertake work in Montreal, Quebec, Calgary, Alberta as well as across Canada and the United States. Our focus is on the creation of spectacular and eye-catching green walls either inside or out.

Vancouver is surrounded by the ocean, mountains and forests. You don’t have to go far to discover natural green walls growing on cliffs next to the sea, near waterfalls or on old-growth rainforest trees. This amazing region has inspired us to bring nature into the cities. When deciding on a name there were certain things that we hoped people would envision when they heard it. We wanted to portray the ideas of nature and city. When one walks around urban centers today, although there may be parks and tree lined streets, there are many buildings that are simply concrete structures which lack colour, diversity and pizzazz.

If colours are used they are usually single-toned, boring and monotonous. Colours can be interpreted differently but we felt that the colour grey (or the color gray in American spelling) gives the feeling of cold and boring things, such as "a grey winter day".

So for us grey represented dull and repetitive things. Green, on the other hand, gives the feeling of nature, fresh air, healthy living and things that are good for the earth. Green plants provide oxygen and filter the air we breathe as well as being nice to look at. In today’s modern society people like how plants look but many don’t want to have to look after them and end up getting plastic or silk plants.

Although they may be nice to look at, they don’t serve the same function that living plants do. At Green over Grey™ we look after the plants and you reap the benefits! The word ‘over’ was chosen for a number of reasons. The first reason being that we personally choose health and beauty ‘over’ dull and monotonous.

Second, we come and give your living or working space a green make-‘over’. And finally we are physically covering ‘over’ an unexciting wall.

People The team at Green over Grey™ offer in-depth knowledge of design, sustainability, engineering, project management, botany and ecology. To ensure each project is successful we also work in collaboration with architects, designers, developers, contractors and a number of different nurseries. The founders and chief designers of the Vancouver based company are Mike Weinmaster and Patrick Poiraud.

Steps to Your Green Wall Consultation Vancouver green wall consultation, living walls We offer living wall consultations, contact us today! In order to create your unique living wall, we start by meeting with you and visiting your chosen location. We discuss your wishes, view potential vertical spaces and answer any questions that you may have. During this initial meeting we take pictures and make note of the main colours and overall style used in decoration. In preparing each proposal we measure the amount of natural light available for the potential green wall space and factor in exposure to other elements such as wind, rain, etc. Design Green wall design plan As outlined in the aesthetics section, one of our main goals is to create living works of art.

Therefore the next step is determining which plants to use. We strategically select from a stock of hundreds of species, based on characteristics such as colour, texture, pattern and size in order to achieve the greatest visual result. The amount of light and moisture that a plant requires differs greatly from species to species and these are essential aspects we consider before placement. We ensure that plants are positioned correctly so they will thrive and achieve their full potential. Plants filter air borne pollutants and some species are more efficient than others. Our planting strategy is to maximize the number of species that are best at improving indoor air quality.

An important design consideration for exterior living walls is how they are going to evolve over the course of the year. Our goal is to create a green wall that is interesting and beautiful at all times. Therefore bloom time, flower and foliage colour, and the use of evergreen plants are all factors in the design process.

Once the plants have been selected we create blueprints and artistic renderings of the future green wall. These provide you with illustrations that outline the possibilities for the shape and size of the living wall. The renderings will also give an idea of the overall patterns and colours of the completed living artwork.

Once you have reviewed our proposal and determined what you like, we will provide you with a detailed quote for your green wall. Installation Choosing plants for a green wall Once we establish the installation date, we will arrive at your location and start the process of constructing your green wall. We set up an automatic irrigation system which will supply the plants with the ideal amount of water and nutrients.

A more detailed description is found under what are living walls. For indoor green walls, depending on how much natural light there is, special low-energy, high output light fixtures are mounted to illuminate the wall. These lights are both beneficial to the plants and easy on the eyes. We pick a fixture that best suits your décor. Lighting increases visibility of the living masterpiece and helps the plants get their minimum light requirements, especially if they get little or no natural light. The lights are programmable so they will automatically turn on and off. Once the wall has been constructed with the irrigation and lighting systems in place the plants are added. This is the fun part and when the magic happens.

Within just a few days your wall will be transformed from a boring “grey” to a green and lush vertical garden! Maintenance Exterior green wall in Vancouver Canada, private patio living wall, vertical garden maintenance At Green over Grey™ we offer maintenance packages which guarantee a beautiful, lush and healthy green wall at all times. They are intended to eliminate any work by you and to give you total peace of mind.

For the first year after installation a maintenance package is required. This is because the critical acclimatization period for the plants is during this time. Packages are offered for subsequent years, so you can insure that your living wall will continue to be gorgeous for many years to come! The package prices will depend on the overall size of the wall and a quote is provided at the design stage.
